Jeff O’Brien (WHOI) and Cory Beatty (University of Montana) carefully survey the ice floe to make sure it is suitable for an ice station, and it was. (Gary Morgan)
Our Chief Scientist Sarah Zimmerman (IOS), checks on the operations which she has worked tirelessly to make happen on our Arctic expedition. (Gary Morgan)
Vincent Mullett (CCG), carefully monitors the horizon should any Polar bears make their way towards us. (Fred Marin)
Our equipment is craned from the deck and out onto the ice. (Fred Marin)
Jeff O’Brien (WHOI), readies the tripod for mounting the profiler to the mooring cable. (Gary Morgan)
Jeff O’Brien (WHOI), Fred Marin (WHOI), Peer Klattenhoff (CCG), and Cory Beatty (University of Montana) prepare the profiler to be attached to its mooring cable. (Gary Morgan)
Jeff O’Brien (WHOI) and Cory Beatty (University of Montana) put the final bolts on the profiler. (Gary Morgan)
Jeff O’Brien (WHOI), Fred Marin (WHOI), and Cory Beatty (University of Montana) carefully lower the profiler through the ice hole. (Gary Morgan)
The profiler itself from the Ice Tethered Profiler (ITP) has just its sensor sticking out of the water and ice while a communications test is performed before spooling the 800m of cable out.  It is critical to not get the sensors wet at this point, because if there is a problem and the profiler is removed from the water.  The water could freeze and damage the delicate instruments. (Gary Morgan)
Peer Klattenhoff (CCG) and Fred Marin (WHOI) work together to connect the instruments cabling.  It is so cold out that a heat gun is necessary to warm the rubberized connectors so that they are pliable and able to make a tight seal when connected. (Gary Morgan)
Cory Beatty (University of Montana) attaches the Submersible Autonomous Moored Instrument – CO2 just below the rubberized ice hose. (Gary Morgan)
Fred Marin (WHOI) does a final communications test on the Ice Tethered Profiler (ITP).  This test ensures that the ITP was installed and working as expected because once we leave, there is no coming back to fix anything. (Gary Morgan)

As we back away from our ice floe and bring our second ice station to a close.  You can see our Ice Tethered Profiler (ITP) surface buoy sitting ~100m to the right of our cruise track. (Gary Morgan)
