The deck layout for the mooring operations on the Louis at the beginning of the recovery. On the port side is the dual capstan winch and tension cart, which hauls the mooring wire through a block mounted on the deck and the A-frame on the starboard rail.

Captain Marc Rothwell handles the ship from the bridge, constantly positioning the massive vessel in order to keep the mooring wire straight up and down so that it doesn't go under the hull, and later into the ice to retrieve the backup floats.
