Kris Newhall guides the upward looking sonar for measuring ice draft into the surface package prior to lifting the floatation sphere out of the hold. An Acoustic Doppler Current Profiler (ADCP) is also mounted on the top float to measure ocean currents in the 45 m of the water column between the surface and the top sphere.
