Oden
The icebreaker Oden, operated by the Swedish Maritime Administration, will carry 30 researchers from Longyearbyen, Svalbard, to the Gakkel Ridge (roughly 85 N latitude) and back to Tromso, Norway. The ship is shown here steaming across a break in the Arctic ice during an engineering test cruise in June 2007, while WHOI engineer Hanumant Singh and colleagues flew in a helicopter to scout for an efficient way forward.
