R/V Melville : Looking for Climate Change

None of the science could happen without the research vessel. The R/V Melville is a UNOLS vessel. UNOLS stands for University-National Oceaographic Laboratory System. It is run out Scripps Institution of Oceanography in La Jolla California. The Melville was built in 1969. It is 279 feet long, had beam of 46 ft and a maximum draft of 16 ft 6 inches. She can hold upto 38 scientists and it runs with a crew of 23.

The Melville's maximum speed is 14 knots (14 nautical miles per hour), but on our transit we steam between stations between about 11.5 and 12 knots. Our average spacing between deep stations is about half a degree of longitude or about which at this latiutude is about 26 nm. So it take us about 2 and fifteen minutes to get from one station to the next.
