As the science party departs at the conclusion of the cruise, the excitement of heading home is tempered by the melancholy of departing from the wonderful relationships that developed between the science party and with the officers and crew of the Louis over the past 4 weeks.  Some of us are already looking forward to next year's expedition, and others of us are remembering those that we've sailed with on past expeditions.

It is with great sadness that we acknowledge the passing of former Louis crewmember David "Peter" King of Dartmouth, Nova Scotia at the age of 54 after a short but valiant battle with cancer earlier this year.  Peter served 30 years with the Canadian Coast Guard and participated on several JOIS/BGOS cruises where he made many lifelong friends who became a second family to him.  Peter was a loving and devoted father to his two children and maintained his trademark sense of humor to the end.  He will be sorrowfully missed, always loved, and never forgotten by his wife Anne, son David, daughter Elinor, extended family, and all of his friends and associates on the Louis and throughout the Coast Guard.

On the way back through the Northwest Passage to Newfoundland, a ceremony will be conducted from the Louis in honor of Peter whose ashes will be spread from the ship and in the region where he was proud to serve.
