Rick KrishfieldSeptember 24, 2010Expectations are high when we arrive off of Tuktoyaktuk early this morning. We are very anxious to receive the fuel that we've been patiently awaiting for so that we can continue the major portion of our science program in the ice pack. Happily, I can report that the barge is at the meeting location when we arrive, and fueling begins on this day. The 2000 cubic liters (or 528,000 US gallons) of fuel that we are receiving will take approximately 24 hours to pump from the barge. This is a long day and night for the engineers onboard who have to closely monitor the flow rate and tank capacities to make sure that load is taken on without incident. Meanwhile, the chemists have a chance to catch up on their backlog of samples and data entry, while the mooring and buoy groups begin to ramp up their preparations now that their opportunity to perform is within sight. The planning focus shifts to the ice and weather charts, as we hope that we will have favorable conditions of both so that we can make up some lost time in the coming weeks.
