Now that we're off, and most everyone has had a decent night's sleep (except maybe for those officers and crew members who had to stand the night watch), it's time to get started. After breakfast, all scientists and new crew members gather in the forward lounge for a briefing by Captain Marc Rothwell followed by survival suit training and an instructional tour of the ship by 1st Officer Catherine Lacombe.

Afterwards, everyone is busy unpacking gear and setting up labs and other work areas. Then in the early evening we arrive at our first station, which is a Bongo Net cast to catch small critters in the water column (for a better explanation of the science behind the Bongo casts see Dispatch 5 from 2009 and other dispatches from previous years). While this cast was in the early evening, station operations will be performed at any time of the day or night, as required.
